The physical installation of a residential solar system typically takes 1-3 days. However, the complete process from signed contract to system activation usually takes 6-10 weeks. The majority of this time is spent on permitting and utility approval, which we handle entirely on your behalf. Commercial installations typically take 1-4 weeks of on-site work, with a longer overall timeline of 3-6 months due to more complex permitting and engineering requirements.

Most roofs in Massachusetts are suitable for solar installation. The ideal conditions are a south-facing roof with minimal shading and a roof that's in good condition with at least 10-15 years of remaining life. However, east- and west-facing roofs can also produce excellent results. Modern solar panels are incredibly durable and long-lasting. Most panels come with a 25-year performance warranty, guaranteeing at least 80-85% of original production capacity at year 25. In practice, solar panels commonly continue producing electricity effectively for 30-35+ years. The panels themselves have no moving parts, which minimizes wear and maintenance needs. Inverters typically last 12-15 years (microinverters often 25 years) and may need replacement once during the system's lifetime.

Yes. Solar panels produce electricity in all daylight conditions, including cloudy days and throughout winter. While production is lower on cloudy days and during shorter winter days, Massachusetts gets enough annual sunlight to make solar highly cost-effective. In fact, solar panels actually perform slightly better in cooler temperatures. Snow typically slides off panels quickly due to their angle and dark surface. SMART payments are in addition to the electricity savings and net metering credits you receive. The program has been one of the most significant financial drivers for solar adoption in Massachusetts.

Net metering allows you to send excess electricity from your solar panels back to the grid in exchange for credits on your electric bill. When your panels produce more electricity than you're using (typically during sunny midday hours), the excess flows to the grid and your meter effectively "runs backward." You receive credits at or near the retail electricity rate, which you can use during times when your panels aren't producing enough (nighttime, cloudy days). Credits can roll over month to month.

Solar loans allow you to finance your system with fixed monthly payments that are typically less than your current electric bill, with $0 down options available. Some homeowners also use home equity loans or lines of credit, which may offer tax-deductible interest. The federal Investment Tax Credit (ITC) has historically been one of the most significant solar incentives, offering a percentage of your solar installation cost as a credit on your federal tax return. The credit amount and availability have changed over the years through various legislation. Technical Questions

A home battery storage system stores electricity generated by your solar panels for later use: at night, during peak rate hours, or during power outages. While battery storage isn't required for a solar installation, it adds significant value in several scenarios: if you want backup power during grid outages, if your utility uses time-of-use rates, or if you want maximum energy independence. Without a battery, a standard grid-tied solar system will shut down during a power outage for safety reasons. This prevents your panels from sending electricity into power lines that utility workers may be repairing. With a battery storage system, your solar panels can continue to power your home during outages by charging the battery, which provides electricity to your designated backup circuits. This gives you continuous power for essential loads like lights, refrigerator, internet, and medical equipment.

Solar panels require very little maintenance. They have no moving parts and are designed to withstand rain, snow, wind, and hail. Rain naturally cleans panels in most cases. We recommend a visual inspection once or twice a year to check for any debris, damage, or shading issues. Monitoring your system's production through the provided app or portal helps you spot any performance issues early. If you notice a drop in production, our service team can diagnose and resolve the issue quickly.

The right system size depends on your electricity usage, available roof or ground space, budget, and goals. Most Massachusetts homeowners install systems between 6-12 kW, which typically requires 16-32 panels. Yes. East Coast Solar is fully licensed and insured in the state of Massachusetts. We carry comprehensive general liability insurance, workers' compensation coverage, and all required electrical and construction licenses. We're happy to provide proof of insurance and licensing upon request.

Yes. We stand behind our work with comprehensive warranties. Solar panels come with 25-year manufacturer performance warranties. Inverters carry 12-25 year warranties depending on the type. Our workmanship is warranted for 10 years, covering our installation, wiring, labor and roof penetrations.
